Microsoft Work from home Flexibility, how much flexible?



After Twitter, now Kathleen Hogan – Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer of Microsoft have recently released a blog post on official Microsoft Blogs, where she speaks about Embracing a flexible workplace around Microsoft while this covid-19 pandemic.

Kathleen says, over the past few months, we have learned a lot about productivity, flexibility, durability and sensitivity. We worked in ways we never thought possible. Including managing the necessary security measures, learning to communicate with small or large groups while presenting on-screen. Caring for family and friends while in the next call, adjusting hours to meet new needs and much more.

At the same time, the epidemic has raised questions about what our employees should expect in the future. it is our goal to provide as much flexibility as possible to support individual work styles while balancing business needs and ensuring that we live our culture.

Kathleen mentions that they have provided guidance to employees to make informed decisions around different scenarios that could include changes to their worksite, work location, and/or work hours once offices are open without any COVID-19 restrictions. Kathleen says step-by-step guidance includes considerations like salary and benefits, personal taxes, office space, local law, expenses and more.

Additionally, Microsoft recognizes that some employees will continue working from onsite but some roles and businesses are better suited for working from the workplaces only.

However, for most roles, we view working from the home part is less than 50% as now standard – assuming the manager and team are in sync.

Flexibility in working schedules is now considered standard for most roles. While part-time continues to be required manager approval, our guidance is meant to facilitate an open conversation between a manager and employee regarding thoughtfulness.

Also, there is guidance for managers and employees to discuss and address considerations such as role requirements, personal tax, salary, expenses, etc.

Microsoft is flexible

Helping employees to plan their future by providing an option for returning to any of their offices if they want to, except for onsite roles. While we’ve shared that we will challenge long-held assumptions and seek to be at the forefront of what is possible leveraging technology.

Microsoft has also communicated that we are not committing to having every employee work from anywhere, as they believe there is value in employees being together in the workplace.
